I'm hanging out in the research office right now. I'm post call for Cardiothoracic surgery and since I was the second person on call the night before and didn't have to come in at night, I have to come to work at noon and see the preops. I am the IPAP person, which stands for Inpatient Preoperative Assessment and Planning person. It's a continued play on words of the term CPAP (center for preoperative assessment and planning) which is a play on words of it's original meaning (continuous positive airway pressure). Yes, that's the type of fun that anesthesiologists have. That, and telling people that we pass gass all day long.
So it's a Friday and it's on the slow side, so I'm just chilling in the research office checking email, and waiting for the second list to come out. We have 3 lists that come out: 12pm, 3pm, and 5pm. Each list is more exciting that the previous one. The 12pm gives you a tease as to the exciting cases to come. But you have no idea which one you're going to get to do, so you get to see them all! But then, at 3:00, the lists have the following day's room assignments on them and at that point, we will know which anesthesiologist will be in each OR. If someone is post-call or an attending is in a room alone, then those people's patients need to be seen first. Then at 5pm, we get the final list and get to sign out to the people on call for the night.
